A Totally Unexpected Treasure

If you’re following our adventures here, you might think nothing’s been happening. But the fact is, there’s been SO much happening lately, we haven’t had time to do a proper update!

The biggest news is the discovery by Susanne Oehme at the Wolmirstedt Museum of a documentary which included FILM FOOTAGE of what appeared to be “our” train.

A search through the U.S. National Archives produced a film called “111_ADC_9721.” No wonder we didn’t know what was in it until now!

But it’s true: somebody took FILM of the train and its people on April 14th, 1945. And now we have that film.

Here it is, all three minutes and thirty seconds of it, courtesy of the U.S. National Archives and Matthew Rozell:

Several people have now recognized themselves or others in this footage. Including Israel’s Poet Laureate Yaakov Barzilai — in a flood of conflicting emotions, tears flowing, he watched the footage — and recognized himself, his mother, and his sister! Imagine being confronted with such an image seventy-eight years after the fact.

Matt Rozell has colorized some screenshots from the film and given more details about this amazing find. See it all on his world-famous blog: teachinghistorymatters.com
